Ferran Adrià’s leading role captured the attention of the major figures in the culinary world, including in other cultural spheres where barely any contact had been established. There is no doubt that the beginning of intercultural relations with Japan and its culinary tradition has offered a new vision of cooking and gastronomic experience, something that had never previously been considered in the Western world.
THE YUZU TIGER
In July 2017, gastronomy took to the stage at the Kaiseki Theatre, which presented the play The Yuzu Tiger. It tells the story of the relationship between Ferran Adrià and elBulli and the Japanese restaurant Mibu, as part of Barcelona’s Festival Grec.
The leading roles were played by the actors Roger Zanuy and Isaac Lázaro from the Kaiseki Theatre company. It was directed by Roger Julià and its musical score was by Pep Sala. The performance tells the story of the inspirational friendship between Ferran Adrià and Hiroyoshi Ishida, from Tokyo’s Mibu restaurant. The show provides a dialogue between tradition and modernity and deals with relationships between humans from different cultures in the 21st century.

MIBU, THE MOON ON A PLATE
On 19 September 2022, within the Culinary Zinema section of the San Sebastian Film Festival, the film Mibu, the Moon on a Plate had its premiere. This wonderful documentary film, directed by Roger Zanuy, was a heart-felt tribute to Hiroyoshi Ishida and his wife.
The Ishidas tell their story in the film and share their sources of inspiration, while some of the world’s best chefs (Ferran Adrià, José Andrés, Massimo Bottura, Joan Roca, Andoni Luis Aduriz, Oriol Castro and Albert Raurich) tell about the impact that their philosophy and cooking has had on contemporary Western cuisine.
