CHAPTER 8

BOTTLING TECHNIQUES

The principal focus of this chapter on wine bottling techniques are the three elements that enable wine to go from the winery to the market. We look at the glass bottle and then discuss the elements that accompany it. The first of these is the bottle stopper, of which cork is the most important and highly valued option. We examine the various alternatives to this natural product that are currently available: screw caps, glass stoppers, biopolymers, etc. Then we consider the bottle label that expresses the culture and philosophy of the winery and gives the product its image. It is one of the key elements of winery communications and customer relations. We explore the legal requirements that such communications must contain when transmitting information to the consumer.

And, speaking of bottles, in this chapter we look at the alternative receptacles that are used, depending on the moment of consumption, instead of the usual 75 cl bottle.
