CHAPTER 4

TYPES OF WINE TASTING

Once we have analysed the criteria and categories that make it possible to classify wine tasting, we can ascertain the differing types of tasting. These are paradigmatic examples that share the same characteristics. In total, 17 types are analysed in depth: contextualisation tasting, showroom tasting, verification tasting, survival tasting (tasting to guard against poisoning of important figures), grape tasting to decide when to harvest, tasting to guide winemaking, en primeur tasting, bottling control tasting, tasting linked to the purchase of other products, tasting to comply with the law, comparative competition tasting, wine competitions, specialist journalism tasting, taster competitions, leisure tasting, tasting for training purposes, and academic and scientific tasting. The characteristics and particularities of all of them are described: the people involved, the usual infrastructures, how the event is carried out, real examples, etc. The chapter also ends with a section dedicated to the new science of sensometry: wine tasting to measure the senses and obtain sensory data.
