Chapter 13

THE ERA OF NEW ELABORATIONS (1565 – 1740)

We are entering the era of the Baroque, a period of exploration and consolidation. Trade expands, political alliances and tariff treaties are established that challenge the balance between trade and product quality. Meanwhile, trade in wine becomes more developed and further-reaching.

Eventually, wine becomes established in North America and South Africa. We examine the history, myths, and legends of the world’s most famous wine monk: Dom Pérignon. If any tool changes the course of the history of wine, it is the glass bottle that is increasingly robust, with more efficient closures that require a corkscrew.

We enter the taverns of the time and see how conflict between England and France causes Port wine to become the dominant wine in the market during this era.
