CHAPTER 2

THE ACT OF WINE TASTING

Actions give rise to activities -in our case, wine tasting and the act of sampling wine. Activities have a purpose, which can be economic, recreational, philosophical, nutritional, etc. What is the purpose of wine tasting?

The Sapiens method tries to situate any object or activity of study within a global context, in order to find out where it has the greatest influence. We will ask questions with a macro-focus: is wine tasting a necessary activity? Who benefits from this activity?

Wine tasting is an act both physical and mental, not just because it is a matter of instinctively perceiving a liquid, but also there is a whole mechanism and set of cognitive processes involved: we compare a wine with others, we think about why it tastes that way, we decide whether to purchase it, and so on.
